This is the story of two brothers who worked together on their family farm. One was married and had a large family; the other was single. At the end of each day, they divided everything equally—both the produce and the profit.
One evening, the single brother reflected, “It doesn’t seem fair for us to share equally. I live alone and have modest needs, while my brother has many mouths to feed.” Moved by this thought, he quietly began taking a sack of grain from his own storehouse each night and carrying it across the field to place in his brother’s bin.
At the same time, the married brother thought to himself, “It’s not right that we divide the produce and profit equally. I have a wife and children who will care for me in the future, but my brother has no one to rely on.” Acting on this concern, he too began, each night, to secretly carry a sack of grain to his brother’s storehouse.
For years, both were puzzled that their grain supplies never seemed to diminish.
Then one night, under the cover of darkness, the two brothers met unexpectedly in the field—each carrying a sack of grain meant for the other. In that moment, they realized the depth of each other’s love and generosity. Without a word, they dropped their sacks and embraced.
